Venue

The Valero Texas Open 2017 takes place at the 7,400 yard Oaks Course at the TPC San Antonio – the venue since 2010, where it has been won by Adam Scott, Brendan Steele, Ben Curtis, Martin Laird, Steven Bowditch, Jimmy Walker and, most recently, Charley Hoffman. The course balances some narrow tree-lined fairways, rewarding accuracy off the tee, with several wider fairways – which allow for a more tactical approach to the greens. Our 45/1 tip Kevin Chappell finished in T4 here last year.

Favourites

A top five finish at the Masters and a share of 11th at the Heritage suggest that Matt Kuchar’s game is in good shape and he leads the betting for the Texas Open, at a best price of 20/1 with Betfair. Defending champion Hoffman can be backed at 25/1 with Betfred – with Ryan Moore and Brooks Koepka also both widely available at 25s. Branden Grace and Brendan Steele are both 28/1 shots with Adam Hadwin at 30/1 with Paddy Power – who are offering 7 places for each-way bets on this event.

Tips

Ryan PalmerRYAN PALMER opened 2017 with a run of missed cuts, but his season had begun well at the back end of 2016 and he was back on song at the Heritage at the weekend where he finished in a share of 11th place. He has a good recent record at this venue, finishing sixth and fourth on his last two visits here at TPC San Antonio and 15th back in 2013, and with plenty of 33/1 around he looks a touch of value at 50s with either Bet365 or Betfred.

Daniel SummerhaysAs our 40/1 tip Luke Donald showed in the Heritage last week, some players simply find certain venues to their liking irrespective of recent form – and the same goes for DANIEL SUMMERHAYS in Texas. Summerhays hasn’t played especially well of late, although he did make the cut at Augusta two weeks ago, but he certainly has a great record here, posting results of 7-2-4-13 on his last 4 visits. It all points to Bet365‘s price of 75/1 being a little generous.

Ollie-SchniederjansOLLIE SCHNIEDERJANS is moving swiftly up the world rankings and is enjoying his first full season on the PGA Tour – with four top 10s from his last 11 starts including a share of third place at last week’s Heritage tournament. That result lifted the young American – who finished T12 at the Open in 2015 – to his highest career ranking of 102 and he will have his eyes on the top 100 this week. William Hill rate him as a 25/1 shot, but he can be backed at 55/1 with Bet365.
